HAPPY TIMES IN HELENA

After leaving Glacier last Saturday, we set our sights on Yellowstone. But with it being Labor Day weekend and booking on fairly short notice, we couldn't get a spot until Monday. We needed a place to stay for a couple of nights, so we chose Helena because it was roughly the halfway point to our next destination. We also wanted a city location because after spending a week at a remote campground, we were low on groceries and supplies. Helena was perfect because it had everything we needed in a 15-minute radius.

It was also a relief to be back on full hookups after three weeks of water/electric only. For non-RVers, full hookup means that you have a sewer connection at your campsite and there is essentially no limit to how much water you can use for showers, toilet flushing, dish washing, laundry, etc. because it all drains away immediately. With water/electric only, any drainage collects in the onboard storage tanks, so you have to be very conservative with water usage. Even with 5-minute showers, using paper plates instead of washing dishes, using campground laundry facilities, etc., our tanks usually fill up within 2-3 days. It is NOT fun. So as soon as we got settled in Helena, I started washing ALLLLLLL the things (sheets, towels, etc.) and doing housecleaning that had been neglected for the past three weeks. And let me tell you, that first long shower was fantastic!

The best part of the weekend, though, was that we got to meet up with friends from home. They, too, are on a cross-country RV trip for a few months and have been on nearly the same route we've taken for the past few weeks. They just finished a week in Yellowstone and were on their way to Glacier while we were headed in the opposite direction. As we were driving to Helena, they called to say they would be arriving there the next day to join us! We were thrilled! As I've said before, it gets lonely on the road so even just one day with friends was a huge morale boost. We discussed our routes home and discovered that we will likely cross paths again in New Mexico or Texas around late October, so we are hoping to coordinate another meetup. It's funny how our schedules are so busy that we can never seem to find time to hang out together at home, but we can manage it halfway across the country!
