We’ve arrived in Montana where we will spend the next several weeks. We had a week to kill before heading to Billings, so we spent it at a campground owned by a Mennonite family on the Crow Indian reservation. To say it was rural would be an understatement - the closest grocery store was an hour away in any direction. But it was quiet and we had good internet so Eric could work, which was all we needed. And it had lovely long-range views of the surrounding countryside, especially at sunset.
This is why Montana is known as “Big Sky Country.” One of the things I was looking forward to on this trip was seeing wide open spaces and empty roads with no traffic. Well, we found it!
We didn’t go on any outings this week because there really wasn’t anywhere to go. But I used the downtime to prepare for starting homeschool after our books are delivered next week.
Yesterday we packed up and headed to Billings where the KOA corporate headquarters is located. Eric will be busy with capital planning meetings for the next two weeks, but this campground has an awesome playground and mini golf course to keep the boys entertained. There’s also a pool which we need to cool off, given that temps will reach 100 degrees this week! Ugh…I was hoping it would be cooler this far north! We just can’t seem to ditch this heat!
Speaking of avoiding harsh weather, we discovered that at least one store out here offers plenty of indoor entertainment. Scheels is like a hybrid of Kohls, Home Goods, and Bass Pro Shops, but with some quirky added features. They have a giant Ferris wheel, bowling, an arcade, various photo ops, and animatronic Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln figures. Very random, but it also kept us in the store longer than we would have otherwise - so mission accomplished.
That’s all for now, other than another failed attempt at a state line photo. The Montana welcome sign was in place with a scenic background, but someone decided to pull off and get their own close-up photo so their RV was in my shot. Boooooooo…
