HOT IN THE HEARTLAND

As we work our way west, we put in a full weekend of driving through Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. Not surprisingly, our view was mostly corn and soybean fields the whole way - but there were also dozens of enormous wind turbines.

We stopped overnight at a small rural campground in central Illinois that was surrounded by - you guessed it - corn and soybean fields.

The next day we continued on to our destination in Council Bluffs, IA - just a 15-minute drive across the Missouri River to Omaha, NB. We stayed at a state park that was conveniently close to town and had all the amenities for a low price. It even had a huge playground and a lake we could swim in. The latter was important, because it was HOT. The feels-like temperature got up to 110 and our RV's air conditioner had a hard time keeping things cool. At one point it was 84 degrees indoors, even with reflective film covering the windows to keep the sun out. Fortunately Eric was able to make some modifications to the AC which helped, but the sun was still so brutal that the boys couldn't play outside. I took them to an indoor trampoline park just so they could get out some energy without overheating.

We ended the week with another half-day of driving to South Dakota. Our weekend stop is an interesting one!
