Our next stop was Cherokee, North Carolina. We spent the first evening exploring the new pool area that just opened a few weeks ago. Eric has spent months overseeing renovations to the existing pool and new features like a splash pad, outdoor games, fire pits, etc. It turned out great!
The campground was fairly quiet our first day here, but by Friday evening it was jam-packed with campers here for the July 4 weekend. The campground staff organized a bike parade with free decorations for the kids, which is just the kind of wholesome fun I love to see. The boys even decorated Piper, who was a good sport as always.
We mostly hung around the campground all week, in part because we've a lot of rain (2-3 times a day). We did venture out for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoyed the cool breezes at the higher elevations.
Today we went tubing. Surprisingly, the river was not crowded, nor was it as cold as I expected it to be. It was fun and fairly uneventful until one of the last rapids, where Reed's tube flipped over and dumped him face-first into the water. It was gushing over his head and the current was sweeping me away too fast to get to him, but thank the Lord, he was able to swim out of it and get to a rock where Eric could rescue him. We were all a bit shaken afterward, but it wasn't long before Reed was bragging about his great swimming skills and how he was able to get himself to safety.
Tomorrow we move on to Gatlinburg, Tennessee!
